FAQ's

The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in the Commonwealth of Virginia is a historic preservation and patriotic service organization committed to honoring and promoting our national heritage through education, preservation, and civic engagement—especially through its stewardship of Wilton House Museum. Equally vital are the efforts of our 9 Town and County Committees, whose local projects, markers, and traditions serve as living threads in the fabric of Virginia’s rich colonial legacy. Together, we uphold a legacy not only remembered, but actively lived.

Membership is extended to women who can trace lineal descent from an ancestor who rendered service to the American colonies before July 5, 1776. Acceptable forms of service include civil, military, or other significant roles in support of the colonial cause.

To begin your path to membership, you’ll need to be proposed by a current member of the Virginia Society. If you don’t already know a member, there are several meaningful ways to connect. Attend one of Wilton House Museum’s many public programs and events, ask friends or family if they have connections, or consider volunteering as an interpretive guide at the Museum—an excellent way to engage with our mission and meet active members of the organization. We’re always eager to welcome kindred spirits who share our passion for history, service, and heritage.

Applicants must submit a completed lineage worksheet, supporting genealogical documentation, and proof of qualifying ancestor’s service. The links provided offer examples of the paperwork required, as well as a list of approved research genealogists available for private hire to assist with your application. Our Membership Committee is also happy to provide guidance and help point you toward useful resources as you begin your journey.

Yes, there are several fees associated with the application and ongoing membership. These help support the Society’s preservation, educational, and patriotic service efforts. The costs include:

  • $75.00 application fee
  • $100.00 fee for review by a verifying genealogist
  • $150.00 one-time initiation fee
  • $225.00 Annual dues

In addition, you may choose to join your local Town and County Committee, where annual dues range from $25 to $50, depending on the committee. These optional local memberships provide opportunities for deeper involvement in preservation and programming efforts in your community.

The application process follows a thoughtful and structured timeline. We accept new candidate proposals three times a year—in February, June, and September.

Once your application is submitted to the Membership Committee, there is typically a one-month window before it is formally presented to the Board of Managers for review. After that point, the pace of the process is guided by you, the candidate.

The first step is to submit the Ancestor Approval Form. In most cases, this is a simple formality, as your ancestor may already appear on our pre-approved list. However, new ancestors are identified and verified each year, so don’t be discouraged if yours hasn’t yet been listed—our team is here to support you.

Once your ancestor has been approved, please allow approximately one month for processing, as all of our Registrars are dedicated volunteers. From there, it’s your turn to gather and submit your documentation.

Some candidates are able to complete their paperwork in as little as 90 days, while others may take longer depending on the depth of research required. No matter your pace, we are here to assist and encourage you every step of the way.

Yes, the Virginia Society offers several types of membership to reflect different stages of involvement and eligibility.

  • Junior Dames are younger members who are beginning their journey with the Society and learning about our mission and values.
  • Full Members have completed the full application and verification process and are entitled to all privileges and responsibilities of membership.
  • Courtesy Members are individuals who hold full membership in another state Society of the NSCDA but wish to maintain an affiliation with the Virginia Society—often due to family ties, relocation, or personal interest. Please note that Courtesy Memberships are only available to those who are already Full Members in good standing with another recognized state Society.

Membership offers a meaningful way to honor your heritage, engage in patriotic service, participate in preservation projects, and join a community of women dedicated to making history matter.
